Writing Prompt For Children

I’ve given plenty of prompts to adults so today I thought I’d give something to the younger audience.

Online Children’s Writing Course

A few years ago I started an online writing course for children’s books and its a perfect way to learn the craft, what to look out for, how to sell yourself and, with a bonus of a final examination (I got 97%).

It’s a costly course; I think it’s in the hundreds, BUT if you look at Groupon, there typically is a hefty discount available, I’d try that route first.

If you’re thinking of becoming a children’s writer but need a place to start, I suggest here. If you’d like the course book and a certificate, for a small cost you can also purchase them. The Groupon link is here.

The resources and learning material are still available long after you’ve completed each module, so if you feel like having a break and then decide to return to it, all the information will still be available.

Creative Writing With My Son: The Beginning

Every time my children received cards for occasions like birthdays or Christmas I’ve been snipping up the characters, trucks, numbers – basically anything appealing on the cards so they don’t go straight in the bin.

I didn’t quite know what to do with this box as my children would typically just open it and pour all the contents on the floor, so I was ready to attic it.

Then my breakthrough came over a week ago.

I started telling visual stories with it! using a ‘random selection’ method to progress the story. So my eldest held a cut out of Lightning McQueen and we just went nuts. He was at the shops and bumped into Father Christmas and they went on an adventure and met a purple alien who invited them round for tea.

To my delight my children love this!!

I need to now incorporate this creativity into writing. I’ll have to do all the writing but if I can keep each story I think it’ll encourage my children to be more creative and think like little writers.

Cards aren’t just a waste of money after all!

Another Productive Evening

754 words tonight, very pleased with that! I had planned to continue writing the phone call from last night but as I sat at the laptop and re-read the last paragraph or so no inspiration came to me to WANT to write it out, think my brain is re-grouping and planning it out visually before communicating it to my fingers. Interestingly I felt drawn to writing out a scene set in the King’s office, it’s going smoothly and according to plan, though I need to work on my characters a bit more, give them meaning, a drive and some dramatic elements I think this is what I’ll work on a bit more over the next few days.

I didn’t have much time to write during the day today, I rarely do with having 2 children but I did have a quick goose at word count trackers for my website and I think because of the basic plan I’m on it’s not going to be possible, not sure there’s any point in upgrading just yet so may have to leave that item in a things-to-do pile for the website.  The picture above is no way one I took personally, I am a neat freak and like to see the floor from time to time.  I do however think if you’re going to buy this much junk (I like to call all toys junk because they typically are) then at least train your child all about tidy up time!

Night night readers, hope you have a productive evening like I did (if not better!).
